George Egerton (the pen name of Mary Chavelita Dunne) was one of the foremost ‘New Women’ writers of the late-Victorian period. Her two classic short story collections, ‘Keynotes’ (1893) and ‘Discords’ (1894) caused a sensation on their first publication, with their daring ideas about female equality and their outspoken notions about the stifling effects of marriage. The sense of alienation they express, together with an intensely subjective focus upon the ‘psychological moment’ also makes them key works of early modernism. They remain important landmarks in feminist fiction.
